Underwater vs conventional endoscopic mucosal resection for small size non-pedunculated colorectal polyps: A randomized controlled trial

BMC Gastroenterology Sep 30, 2020

Zhang Z, Xia Y, Cui H, et al. - Researchers conducted this multicenter randomized controlled clinical trial to assess the safety and effectiveness of underwater endoscopic mucosal resection (UEMR) vs conventional endoscopic mucosal resection (CEMR) of small non-pedunculated colorectal polyps. The sample consisted of patients with small size, non-pedunculated colorectal polyps (4–9 mm in size) who had colonoscopic polypectomy. The complete resection rate in the intention-to-treat (ITT) analysis was 83.1% (59/71) in the UEMR group and 87.3% (62/71) in the CEMR group. For the treatment of small colorectal polyps, findings suggest that UEMR is safer and has equal efficacy compared to CEMR in en-bloc resection. UEMR can be an alternative approach to excising small and non-pedunculated colorectal adenomatous polyps.
