Understanding white matter structural connectivity differences between cognitively impaired and nonimpaired active professional fighters

Mishra VR, Sreenivasan KR, Zhuang X, et al. - Researchers used data from high angular diffusion MRI of 69 cognitively impaired and 70 nonimpaired active professional fighters from the Professional Fighters Brain Health Study and made structural connectomes to know whether there was variation in the topological white matter (WM) organization between cognitively impaired and nonimpaired active professional fighters and whether graph-theoretical measures show relationships with neuropsychological scores in these groups. A topological WM reorganization resulting from repeated head impacts in fighters prone to cognitive decline that was associated with neuropsychological scores was recognized. Moreover, graph-theoretical measures were differentially related to neuropsychological scores among groups. Differentiated WM connectivity including regions of hippocampus, precuneus, and insula within this cohort of cognitively impaired fighters was discovered, implying that there was a discernible WM topological reorganization in fighters likely to have cognitive deterioration.
