Understanding the main predictors of length of stay after total hip arthroplasty: Patient-related or procedure-related risk factors?
Journal of Arthroplasty Dec 06, 2020
Girbino K, Klika, A, et al. - The present study was conducted to ascertain the influence of patient- and procedure-related risk factors as predictors of > 1-day Length of Stay (LOS) after total hip arthroplasty (THA). Between 2016 and 2019, researchers designed a prospective cohort including a total of 5,281 individuals who had undergone primary THA. They classified risk factors as patient-related or procedure-related. The data exhibited that the procedure-related risk factors remain the main drivers of predicting LOS, although patient-related risk factors alone provide predictive value for LOS following THA. These data encourage evaluation of which specific procedural risk factors should be targeted to optimize LOS when choosing between inpatient and outpatient THA, particularly within a Medicare population.
