Understanding the asthmatic response to an experimental rhinovirus infection: Exploring the effects of blocking IgE
The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology Apr 06, 2020
Heymann PW, Platts-Mills TAE, Woodfolk JA, et al. - Researchers focused at comparing the response to an experimental inoculation with rhinovirus-16 among allergic asthmatics with the response in healthy controls, as well as they assessed the impacts of delivering omalizumab prior to and during the infection. For this purpose, they conducted two clinical trials in parallel. They noted the augmentation of lower respiratory tract symptoms and blood eosinophil counts, and that lung function was declined in allergic asthmatics early post-rhinovirus inoculation but increased late in the infection during symptom resolution. During the early/innate phase of the infection, the impact of administering omalizumab on the response to rhinovirus was identified to be the most pronounced.
