Understanding physical activity and sedentary behaviour among preschool-aged children in Singapore: A mixed-methods approach
BMJ Open Apr 10, 2020
Chen B, Waters CN, Compier T, et al. - Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, researchers conducted a cross-sectional study to examine physical activity (PA) and sedentary behaviour (SB) among preschool-aged children in Singapore and potential correlates at multiple levels of the socioecological model from in-school and out-of-school settings. For seven consecutive days, PA and SB in children (n = 72) were quantified using wrist-worn accelerometers. Children (4.4 ± 1.1 years) spent 7.8 (IQR 6.4–9.0) hours per day in SB, and 0.5 (0.3–0.8) hours per day in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) based on accelerometry. MVPA has been similar throughout the week, and SB has been slightly higher on non-school days. In preschool-aged children in an urban Asian setting, MVPA was low and SB was high. The authors identified diverse in-school and out-of-school correlates of PA and SB that should be taken into consideration in health promotion strategies.
