Understanding factors relevant to poor sleep and coping methods in people with schizophrenia
BMC Psychiatry Jul 30, 2021
Chang YC, Chang MC, Chang YJ, et al. - Researchers investigated factors relevant to sleep problems in community-dwelling people with schizophrenia. In addition, they explored coping strategies used by these individuals. A semi-structured interview and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) assessment were completed by 18 participants with schizophrenia. Analysis revealed psychiatric symptoms and nightmares as unique sleep disruptions in these people, and impact of poor economic status on their sleep. The PSQI revealed the tendency towards poor sleep quality among people with schizophrenia, even though they may have positive perceptions of their sleep quality. To address the sleep problems, seemingly hypnotics were preferred by the participants, which may be due to limited knowledge concerning alternatives. Based on findings, researchers recommend encouraging mental health professionals to receive training in the application of non-pharmacological approaches to support their clients’ issues related to sleep.
