Under-prescription of Step III opioids in French cancer survivors with chronic pain: A call for integrated early palliative care in oncology
Journal of Pain and Symptom Management Nov 17, 2019
Janah A, et al. - Researchers examined cancer survivors 5 years after diagnosis for chronic pain (CP) prevalence and related treatment. In addition, they assessed factors associated with prescribing opioids among survivors with CP, focusing on access to palliative care (PC). Among 4,174 French patients with cancer that was diagnosed 5 years previously, 63.5% of the respondents reported current CP (ie, pain ≥ 3 months), indicating a high prevalence of CP 5 years after a cancer diagnosis. Under-prescription of Step III opioids was reported; however, these were positively associated with inpatient PC. In France, PC access remains limited, particularly among cancer survivors. Findings emphasized the necessity of integrating PC in oncology to provide the best cancer-related symptoms management.
