Uncertainty over implications of placental histopathological findings: A survey of Australian and New Zealand neonatologists
Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health Oct 09, 2019
Lieschke A, et al. - Investigators discussed the current knowledge of Australian and New Zealand maternal-fetal medicine specialists and neonatologists on placental assessment, including the importance of particular histopathological observations, in terms of accepted best practice for placental pathology-based clinical management. The survey was attended by a total of 74 neonatologists. Due to a low response rate, maternal-fetal medicine specialists were excluded. A total of 100% of respondents claimed that placental review provided useful data about recent pregnancy and neonatal outcomes. They mentioned being aware of the presence of macroscopic testing protocols and signs for placenta histopathology analysis. The findings show placental review is respected by neonatologists in Australia and New Zealand but shows the need for better education about the importance and relevance of the results and what best practice would be to follow up reports. Neonatologists did not agree on which particular placental lesions had consequences for potential pregnancy or neonatal outcomes and how to address these results.
