Ultrasound-guided nerve blocks as analgesia for nonoperative management of distal radius fractures–Two consecutive randomized controlled trials

Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma Mar 27, 2019

Siebelt M, et al. - Researchers evaluated 2 peripheral nerve block types ie, 1 at the level of the elbow, or cubital nerve block (CNB), and another an axillary nerve block (ANB) to assess (in an Emergency Department setting) if a conventional fracture hematoma block (FHB) or an ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve block had more superior analgesic influence during nonoperative management of distal radius fractures. They randomized 110 cases with radiographic displaced distal radius fractures. They noted less pain experienced by CNB cases during block procedure, finger trap traction, fracture reduction, after plaster cast application, and after control radiography. They also noted less pain during nonoperative management of distal radius fracture using an ANB, however participating clinicians had minimal expertise using ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve blocks.
