Ultrasound can help to indirectly predict contact of parotid tumors to the facial nerve, correct intraglandular localization, and appropriate surgical technique
Head & Neck Jun 14, 2019
Psychogios G, et al. - In this prospective study, researchers assessed the role of ultrasound in benign parotid tumor surgery, especially by helping to identify the tumor location and its connection to the facial nerve (FN) and by anticipating the appropriate surgical approach. For this investigation, 50 patients had a preoperative ultrasound. With an accuracy of 96%, contact of parotid tumors with the FN was determined. Only once was wrongly determined the need for intraoperative nerve exposure. The appropriate surgical method in 98% of patients was properly anticipated. Ultrasound helps to predict the connection between parotid tumors and the FN indirectly. The most significant landmark is the retromandibular vein.
