Ultrasound assessment of gastric emptying time after a standardised light breakfast in healthy children: A prospective observational study
European Journal of Anaesthesiology Nov 07, 2018
Beck CE, et al. - Authors assessed gastric emptying time following a standardized light breakfast in healthy children. Before and afterwards, they performed ultrasound examinations of the gastric antrum hourly to determine the gastric antral area (GAA)—a surrogate parameter for gastric volume in children in the right lateral position (RLP). After the light breakfast, they noted an initial increase and a subsequent decrease in GAA in RLP. Findings also revealed a mean gastric emptying time of less than 4 hours following a standardized light breakfast. Overall, findings supported efforts towards a more liberal fasting regimen for light meals in pediatric anesthesia.
