Ultrasonographic evaluation of upper airway structures in children with obstructive sleep apnea
JAMA Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery Nov 14, 2018
Lin CY, et al. - Experts ascertained if upper airway structures can be assessed using head and neck ultrasonography. They also evaluated whether or not there is a correlation between the ultrasonographic measurements for these structures and the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) seen on polysomnography in children. The children included in this study were younger than 18 years with a diagnosis of sleep-disordered breathing. Findings did not suggest an association of estimated tonsillar volume measured using ultrasonography with the apnea-hypopnea index in childhood sleep-disordered breathing. Nonetheless, they noted that in children with OSA, the lateral pharyngeal wall was significantly thicker than in those with primary snoring at rest.
