Ultrasonic assessment of liver stiffness and carotid artery elasticity in patients with chronic viral hepatitis
BMC Gastroenterology Dec 10, 2018
Li JH, et al. - Using radio frequency (RF) ultrasound and acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) techniques, researchers investigated the link between liver stiffness and carotid artery elasticity in patients with chronic viral hepatitis. Study participants included 217 patients with chronic viral hepatitis caused by either hepatitis B virus (HBV) or hepatitis C virus (HCV). Age and blood sugar were independent predictors of common carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT) for patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC). Although the carotid artery IMT was not significantly higher in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and CHC than in the control group, based on ARFI and RF ultrasound, its functional elasticity parameters had already changed. This finding may be a useful reference for the clinical diagnosis of vascular diseases in patients with viral hepatitis.
