Ulipristal acetate vs gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists prior to laparoscopic myomectomy (MYOMEX trial): Long term results of a double-blind randomized controlled trial
European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology Jun 19, 2020
De Milliano I, Middelkoop MA, Huirne JAF, et al. - This study was conducted with the aim to inscribe the effect of administering ulipristal acetate (UPA) vs gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists (GnRHa) before laparoscopic myomectomy on long term outcomes, regarding quality of life, ultrasound characteristics, hemoglobin levels 6 weeks post-operative, sexual function and menstrual bleeding control, in the MYOMEX-trial. In addition, a cost-analysis was performed. In this double-blind, randomized, controlled, non-inferiority trial, randomization was performed of 55 participants: 30 to the UPA- and 25 to the GnRHa-group. Outcomes revealed similar effects of pre-treatment prior to laparoscopic myomectomy with UPA vs GnRHa on bleeding pattern, menopausal symptoms, sexual functioning, symptom severity and quality of life from baseline up to 6 months postoperative. As the sample size was small, they emphasize practicing caution when interpreting these findings. They did not make firm conclusions on costs of these strategies.
