Types of sedentary behavior and risk of cardiovascular events and mortality in blacks: The Jackson Heart Study

Journal of the American Heart Association Jul 03, 2019

Garcia JM, et al. – In a cohort of 3,592 black participants of the Jackson Heart Study, researchers assessed the relation of cardiovascular disease (CVD) events and all-cause mortality with respect to television viewing vs occupational sitting. Participants self-reported television viewing (< 2, 2–4, and > 4 hours/day) and occupational sitting (never/seldom, sometimes, and often/always), and were observed over a median duration of 8.4 years. Findings revealed a link between television viewing and a greater risk of CVD events and all-cause mortality, while no relation of occupational sitting with these outcomes was evident. Based on these findings, the investigators concluded that a more effective attenuation in CVD and mortality risk in black individuals may be achieved by minimizing television viewing as compared to reducing occupational sedentary behavior.
