Types of occult cancer in stroke and the relation to smoking
Acta Neurologica Scandinavica Jul 17, 2020
Tybjerg AJ, Babore AD, Olsen TS, et al. - Since stroke is associated with an increased risk of occult cancer, researchers assessed which types of occult cancer are most commonly linked with stroke. The Danish Stroke Registry (n = 85,893) was used to find all patients with incident stroke in Denmark from 2003‐2015; these were matched on age and sex 1:10 to the Danish background population with no history of stroke (n = 858,740). According to findings, the increased risk of occult cancer in patients with stroke was primarily for smoking-related cancers (lung, colon, bladder rectum, pancreas, kidney, stomach, and head and neck) while for the most common non-smoking cancers, that is, prostate, breast, melanoma, non‐Hodgkin lymphoma, ovary, and endometrial cancers, there was no greater risk. The dominant type of occult cancer in stroke is lung cancer.
