Type 1/type 2 inflammatory cytokines correlate with olfactory function in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis

American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery Jun 05, 2020

Han X, Wu D, Sun Z, et al. - In the present study, the researchers sought to analyze the pattern of inflammatory cytokines in Chinese patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and their relationship with olfactory function. Institutional review board-approved prospective study in which the olfactory function of 71 CRS individuals was evaluated with Sniffin' Sticks before nasal endoscopic surgery. A total of 71 samples of nasal mucosa in CRS patients, including 25 patients with chronic rhinosinusitis without nasal polyposis and 46 patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis, were evaluated in this analysis. Inflammatory cytokines of both type 1 and type 2 may contribute to the pathogenesis of olfactory dysfunction associated with CRS in the Chinese people.
