Type 1 diabetes-associated cognitive impairment and diabetic peripheral neuropathy in Chinese adults: Results from a prospective cross-sectional study
BMC Endocrine Disorders Apr 02, 2019
Ding X, et al. - In this cross-sectional study, researchers compared type 1 diabetic mellitus (T1DM) neurocognitive functioning vs healthy adults and examined risk factors for cognitive dysfunction in T1DM patients, particularly the correlation between cognitive impairment and peripheral diabetic neuropathy (DPN). For this investigation, they involved 70 T1DM patients and 48 healthy volunteers. Presenting mostly as attention and concentration dysfunctions, visuospatial/executive, language, and abstraction, investigators found that adults with T1DM had mild to moderate cognitive impairment. DPN was identified as a diabetic complication linked with cognitive impairments, as were age, fasting C peptide level, and educational level.
