Tympanostomy tubes or medical management for recurrent acute otitis media
New England Journal of Medicine May 17, 2021
Hoberman A, Preciado D, Paradise JL, et al. - Given official recommendations vary concerning tympanostomy-tube placement for children suffering from recurrent acute otitis media, researchers explored this topic in this study with children 6 to 35 months of age who had experienced at least three episodes of acute otitis media within 6 months, or at least four episodes within 12 months with at least one episode within the preceding 6 months. These participants were randomized to either receive tympanostomy-tube placement or undergo medical management involving episodic antimicrobial treatment. Findings revealed that tympanostomy-tube placement did not result in a significant reduction of the rate of episodes of acute otitis media during a 2-year span, when compared with medical management, in children 6 to 35 months of age with recurrent acute otitis media.
