Two-year outcomes after complete or staged procedure for tetralogy of Fallot in neonates
Journal of the American College of Cardiology Sep 25, 2019
Savla JJ, Faerber JA, Huang YSV, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, researchers used the Pediatric Health Information System database and compared the results of complete vs staged surgery (ie, initial palliative procedure for possible later complete repair) for tetralogy of Fallot among patients who underwent one or another of these procedures before 30 days of age. Death during the 2-year observation period following the initial procedure was considered as the primary outcome. This study included 2,363 patients, including 1,032 who underwent complete surgery and 1,331 who had staged surgery. A significantly higher risk for early and 2-year mortality was observed in relation to complete surgical repair vs staged approach for neonates with tetralogy of Fallot, after accounting for patient and hospital features. These results were mediated by post-operative cardiac complications.
