Two-year incidence of retinal intervention in patients with minimal or no diabetic retinopathy on telemedicine screening
JAMA Ophthalmology Feb 13, 2019
Modjtahedi BS, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, authors estimated the diabetic retinopathy screening photographs of 116,134 individuals to assess the number of cases with minimal or no retinopathy requiring retinal intervention within 2 years of retinal evaluation. They noticed that only 1 of 12,660 candidates (0.000079 patients per year) without baseline retinopathy needed treatment of diabetic retinopathy in the following 2 years whereas 11 subjects with minimal retinopathy required intervention during the same time (1 of 1784 or 0.000561 patients per year). Hence, they suggested extending the recommended follow-up interval for low-risk cases as long as it did not lead to worse follow-up in succeeding years.
