Two staging systems for gastrointestinal stromal tumors in the stomach: Which is better?
BMC Gastroenterology Dec 10, 2017
Park CH, et al. - The long-term prognosis of patients who underwent surgical resection for gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) was determined in this study. Moreover, the clinical efficacy of 2 staging systems was compared: the National Institutes of Health (NIH) consensus criteria and the 7th Union for International Cancer Control/American Joint Committee on Cancer (UICC/AJCC) tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) staging system. Among patients who underwent curative resection for gastric GISTs, the 5-year recurrence-free survival (RFS) rate was excellent. Compared to the NIH consensus criteria, the UICC/AJCC TNM staging system could be more useful for risk categorization of patients with gastric GISTs.
