Tumor size as a prognostic factor in limited-stage thymic epithelial tumors: A multicenter analysis

The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Aug 04, 2020

Yun JK, Kim HR, Kim DK, et al. - Researchers evaluated tumor size as a prognosticator in limited-stage and advanced-stage thymic epithelial tumors (TETs). From 4 tertiary centers, assessment of clinical records of patients with completely resected TETs yielded 1,215 patients with information on the Masaoka–Koga stage (M-K group); classification of 433 patients was performed according to the eighth edition of the Tumor-Node-Metastasis staging system (TNM group). The M-K group had median tumor size of 6.0 ± 2.8 cm and the TNM group had median tumor size of 6.5 ± 3.0 cm. Observations revealed independent prognostic value of tumor size in patients with completely resected limited-stage TETs and suggest a cutoff value > 5.5 cm as possibly valuable for clinicians to enact proper treatment strategies and surveillance.
