Tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes and prognosis: A pooled individual patient analysis of early-stage triple-negative breast cancers

Journal of Clinical Oncology Jan 21, 2019

Loi S, et al. - In early-stage triple negative breast cancer (TNBC), researchers conducted a pooled analysis of studies that assessed the prognostic ability of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs). From nine studies, individual data from 2,148 patients were derived. Observations revealed significantly lower stromally located TILs (sTILs) with older age, larger tumor size, more nodal involvement, and lower histologic grade. In the multivariable model, sTILs added significant independent prognostic information for all endpoints (invasive disease-free survival [iDFS; primary endpoint], distant disease-free survival, and overall survival). Findings establish that sTILs have a strong prognostic role in early-stage TNBC. Patients with high sTILs after adjuvant chemotherapy display excellent survival. This analysis thus supports the integration of sTILs in a clinicopathologic prognostic model for patients with TNBC.
