Tumor budding is an adverse prognostic marker in intestinal-type sinonasal adenocarcinoma and seems to be unrelated to epithelial-mesenchymal transition
Virchows Archiv Jan 29, 2020
Maffeis V, Cappellesso R, Galuppini F, et al. - Researchers intended to evaluate tumor budding (TB) in intestinal-type adenocarcinoma (ITAC) and to assess its possible correlation with EMT markers in this setting. They included 32 surgically resected specimens of non-mucinous/non-signet ring ITAC and assessed them for TB according to the international recommendations developed for CRC. They examined the expression of the EMT markers E-cadherin, ZEB1, ZEB2, SLUG, and SNAIL by immunohistochemistry (IHC). They found TB in 13/32 (40.6%) ITAC cases including the 7 individuals with relapse and the 4 individuals dead of disease. A correlation was found between lymphovascular invasion and TB. The absence of TB was correlated with low ZEB2 expression. The data indicated that TB is correlated with a worse prognosis in ITAC, but the findings do not appear to support the involvement of EMT in this specific setting. future larger studies are required to discuss this point.
