Troponin T correlates with MRI results in neonatal encephalopathy
Acta Pediatrica Apr 18, 2020
Sweetman DU, Kelly L, Hurley T, et al. - In the present study, the researchers sought to explore the association between troponin T in infants with perinatal asphyxia and brain injury on MRI and correlate with neurodevelopmental outcome. In a tertiary referral neonatal centre, serum troponin was sampled in infants requiring resuscitation at birth and/or neonatal encephalopathy. Birth history, clinical parameters, neuroimaging and developmental outcome (Bayley Scores of Infant Development III) have been assessed. Infants with brain injury following perinatal asphyxia had elevated serum troponin significantly, and at 2 years, troponin also associated with developmental scores. Additional studies that combine troponin and MRI may assist in classifying neonatal brain injury to identify aetiology, prognosis and treatment response.
