Trends of suicidal behaviors among high school students in the United States: 1991-2017
Pediatrics Nov 08, 2019
Lindsey MA, et al. - Using the nationally representative school-based Youth Risk Behavior Survey from the years 1991 to 2017, experts intended to ascertain whether racial and ethnic subgroups of adolescents were at high risk for engagement in suicidal behaviors. The results implied that since attempts are the most prominent risk factor related to a suicide death, over time, black youth have faced a rise in suicide attempts, which is disturbing. A notable rise for black boys in injury through attempt transpired, which intimates that black boys could be involved in frequently lethal means when attempting suicide. By gender and race and ethnicity, monitoring trends of suicidal thoughts and behaviors over time permits to discover where to concentrate prevention and intervention attempts. Thus, prospective research should investigate the underlying causes of these changes noted in US high school students.
