Pain Practice May 17, 2019
Orhurhu V, et al. - From the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database, researchers identified 10.3 million chronic pain admissions with opioid use disorder (OUD) from 2011 - 2015 in order to assess the trends in changing rates of opioid use disorder amongst chronic pain patients. Among these, OUD was diagnosed in 680,631 patients. They noted a substantial increase in OUD from 109,222 in 2011 to 172,680 in 2015. Similarly, females, patients aged 65 – 84 years, Medicare insured patients, patients with low annual household income, and cannabinoid use disorder showed upward trends of OUD. Patients with chronic regional pain syndrome and spondylosis showed an increase in OUD from 2011 to 2015.
