Trends of clinical outcomes in patients with a traumatic brain injury (TBI) in Canada between 2006 and 2012
Injury Aug 30, 2019
Sawadogo D, et al. - Trends in hospital mortality, unplanned readmission, hospital length of stay (LOS) and ICU LOS for TBI across Canadian provinces between 2006 and 2012 were compared. In this retrospective multicentre cohort study, TBI admissions across Canadian level I and II trauma centers were assessed. Between 2006 and 2012, a decrease in mortality in Canada was observed, which was mostly driven by Ontario. A significant decrease in hospital length of stay, mostly driven by a decrease in Quebec, was noted in Canada. A decrease in ICU length of stay was observed only in Alberta. These findings suggest that between 2006 and 2012, a significant decreases in mortality, hospital and ICU length of stay for TBI occurred in Canada but only in certain provinces. This study may represent the first step towards a better perception of the impact of trauma system configuration on the burden of injuries in Canada.
