Trends in the surgical management of malignant ovarian germ-cell tumors
Gynecologic Oncology Feb 08, 2020
Nasioudis D, et al. - Researchers used the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database to assess trends in the surgical treatment of malignant ovarian germ cell tumors (MOGCTs) in young women and pediatric patients, as well as to define the associated survival results. Overall 2,238 patients under 40 years who were operated between 1994 and 2014 were identified. Of those, only 12.4% had a hysterectomy. One-third of patients had omentectomy, and one half underwent lymphadenectomy (LND). The rate of omentectomy and hysterectomy reduced. The rate of LND remained unaltered. Findings revealed that pediatric patients having MOGCTs underwent less extensive surgical staging. For young women, a trend suggesting less extensive surgical procedures over time was highlighted, with no apparent detrimental influence on cancer-specific survival.
