Trends in pediatric thyroid cancer incidence in the United States, 1998-2013

Cancer May 01, 2019

Bernier MO, et al. - To investigate if, over time, any increases can be seen in the rates of large, late-stage cancers, researchers analyzed temporal trends in pediatric differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) in the US from 1998 to 2013, by stage and tumor size. They used data for 0- to 19-year-olds from 39 US cancer registries to approximate age-standardized incidence rates of DTC and annual percent changes in primary DTC rates. Findings revealed significantly increasing rates of DTC among 10- to 19-year-olds, seen over time, in the US, which might not be completely explained by rises in medical surveillance during childhood since rates of large and late-stage DTC are increasing over time. Increasing trends were seen for children aged 10 to 19 years and for non-Hispanic whites, non-Hispanic blacks, and Hispanics for both sexes; rates increased significantly over this time period for all tumor stages.
