Trends in opioid use before critical illness among elderly patients in Ontario
Journal of Critical Care Oct 31, 2019
Wang HT, Hill AD, Tara G, et al. - Researchers used health administrative database from the province of Ontario, Canada, to undertook this population-based retrospective cohort analysis, to evaluate temporal trends in preexisting opioid exposure before hospitalization among elderly intensive care unit (ICU) patients, as well as its link with adverse consequences. Overall 711,312 elderly (> 65 years) patient admissions to an ICU were included. Among these, chronic opioid users, intermittent users, and non-users were 6.8% (n = 48,363), 28.1% (n = 200,149), and 65.0% (n = 462,800), respectively. Findings revealed that opioid exposure prior to admission prevailed in this patient population of elderly ICU patients, and higher in-hospital mortality was observed in relation to the use of opioid prior to admission.
