Trends in mortality, readmissions, and complications after endovascular and open infrainguinal revascularization
Surgery May 10, 2019
Khoury H, et al. - Using the 2010–2014 Nationwide Readmissions Database and the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Edition, researchers identified patients with peripheral arterial disease undergoing either in-hospital endovascular or open infrainguinal revascularization to investigate 30-day readmission and resource utilization after these procedures. As per trend analysis, the utilization of both endovascular and open revascularization procedures has overall decreased in the inpatient setting. Open infrainguinal revascularization was noted to be independently associated with increased risk of short-term readmission, complications, and mortality despite lower rates of adverse events compared to endovascular revascularization. They recommend considering these findings while selecting appropriate surgical therapy for lower extremity arterial occlusive disease.
