Trends in mortality from stroke in the European Union, 1996–2015
European Journal of Neurology Oct 12, 2020
Soto Á, Guillén‐Grima F, Morales G, et al. - In the present study, researchers examined trends in mortality caused by a stroke over the last two decades in the 28 member countries of the European Union (EU). Data were taken from the World Health Organization database for age‐standardized stroke mortality rates per 100,000 in the EU for the period 1996–2015. Over the study period, mortality from stroke has declined in the EU by an average annual percent change of 4.2%. The sharpest reductions were seen in Estonia, Portugal and Austria, but all countries displayed downward trends. Stroke mortality has declined in the EU, in both genders, with statistically significant decreases in mortality rates of 4.2% in men and 4.3% in women, across the entire EU. Southern and western countries showed the steepest decreases, though, in recent years, mortality has increased in northern countries.
