Trends in hospitalisation rates for inflammatory bowel disease in western vs newly industrialised countries: A population-based study of countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development
The Lancet: Gastroenterology & Hepatology Feb 16, 2019
King JA, et al. - In this investigation, researchers studied temporal patterns of hospitalisation for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in member countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). From the OECD database, from 1990 to 2016, they evaluated hospitalization rates related to IBD in 34 countries. Mean IBD hospitalisation rates were highest in North America, Europe and Oceania between 2010 and 2015. Hospitalization rates for IBD are high in western countries but typically stabilize or decrease, while rates are increasing rapidly in many newly industrialized countries, reflecting the known increase in the prevalence of IBD in these countries. Potential explanations for these trends include changes in IBD epidemiology, health-care delivery and infrastructure in these countries, as well as overall country-specific patterns in hospitalisations and differences in data collection methods between countries.
