Journal of Arthroplasty Feb 09, 2021
Quinlan ND, Althoff AD, Chen DQ, et al. - This study was sought to present trends and variation in hospital charges and payments compared to surgeons’ for stage 1 (S1) vs. stage 2 (S2) revision septic total knee arthroplasty (TKA), and aseptic revision (AR) TKA. Between 2005 and 2014, researchers applied a 5% Medicare sample to capture hospital and surgeon data for revision TKA. They evaluated year to year variation and regional trends in-patient demographics, Charlson Comorbidity Index, length of stay (LOS), charge multiplier, and payment multiplier. For this analysis, 4,570 AR, 1,323 S1, and 863 S2 TKA patients were enrolled. The data indicated that for revision TKA, the hospital charges and payments relative to the surgeons’ have significantly increased in the setting of stable or increasing patient complexity and decreasing LOS.
