Trends in health care costs and utilization associated with untreated hearing loss over 10 years
JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Jan 23, 2019
Reed NS, et al. - A total of 4.728 subjects with a mean age of 61 years who sought health care between January 1, 1999 and December 31, 2016 were assessed to see if untreated hearing loss correlated with increased health care cost. They calculated an increase of 46% ($22,434) in total health care costs over a period of 10 years in relation to untreated hearing loss. They noticed candidates with untreated hearing loss underwent more inpatient stays and were at a higher risk for 30-day hospital readmission at 10 years post index. They observed the similar trends at 2- and 5-year time points too.
