Trends in geographic and temporal distribution of US children with multisystem inflammatory syndrome during the COVID-19 pandemic

JAMA Apr 11, 2021

Belay ED, Abrams J, Oster ME, et al. - Via performing this cross-sectional study on clinical and laboratory data collected from patients with multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), researchers sought to report on the clinical characteristics and geographic and temporal distribution of MIS-C in the United States. They identified a total of 1,733 patients with MIS-C. These patients had predominantly gastrointestinal, mucocutaneous, and cardiovascular manifestations, and a majority of them required intensive care. The peaks of COVID-19 and the spread of the pandemic from urban to rural communities were closely followed by MIS-C peaks. Consistent with observations, the data suggest that MIS-C resulted from delayed immunologic responses to infection by SARS-CoV-2.
