Trends in foster care entry among children removed from their homes because of parental drug use, 2000 to 2017

JAMA Pediatrics Sep 12, 2019

Meinhofer A, et al. - Researchers conducted this exploratory study to analyze trends in the number of children entering foster care due to parental drug use and characterize changes in their characteristics over time. The foster care caseload cases have risen steadily since 2012 following more than a decade of declines in the US. Findings revealed that there was an increase in the number of children living in foster care and entering care by 12% and 8%, respectively, between 2012 and 2017. The opioid epidemic is one suggested explanation for this recent growth, but it is scarce to support evidence.
