Gleber R, et al. - In order to determine the trend in emergency department (ED) opioid prescriptions over time during the US opioid epidemic, researchers studied all adult patients who presented to two study EDs for a pain-related complaint and received an analgesic prescription upon ED discharge. In this retrospective cohort study, these data were compared to trends in lay media and medical literature regarding the opioid epidemic. Outcomes revealed less opiate prescribing by ED physicians while increasing the amount of non-narcotic analgesic prescriptions. This may be due to the literature indicating a large role of prescription opioids in the opioids crisis. The need for repeat ED visits was not increased in relation to this decrease in opioid prescriptions.
