Trends in complications of pediatric rhinosinusitis in the United States from 2006-2016
International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology Sep 29, 2019
Levy DA, et al. - Researchers assessed the changing prevalence of complications from pediatric acute bacterial rhinosinusitis and illustrated factors related to the development of complicated acute rhinosinusitis in this cross-sectional analyses of the Kids’ Inpatient Database. Participants in the study were children ≤ 20 years with a diagnosis of acute rhinosinusitis. The authors discovered that national estimates for children admitted with acute rhinosinusitis declined from 8,312 cases in 2006 to 5,592 in 2016 over the decade studied. The rate of orbital complications increased from 8.9% to 19.3% and intracranial complications from 2.2% to 4.3%. Children with both complications rose from 0.5% to 1.0% of instances. These observations may be helpful in explaining antibiotic prescription patterns, vaccination effects, and evolving practice patterns. Additional studies justify research into the cause of these trends.
