Trends in blood pressure and usual dietary sodium intake among children and adolescents, National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2003 to 2016
Hypertension Jul 23, 2019
Overwyk KJ, et al. - Given a reduction in blood pressure and sodium consumption among children and adolescents (ie, youths) in the United States over the past decade, researchers analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2003 to 2016 to update temporal trends as well as to find out whether secular alterations in blood pressure might be partly related to usual sodium consumption. Data were analyzed for 12,249 youths aged 8 to 17 years with available blood pressure and dietary data. Among youths, a reduction in blood pressure and usual sodium intake was reported from 2003 to 2016. Although ≈20% higher odds of elevated blood pressure/hypertension and hypertension were reported in relation to 1000 mg/day higher usual sodium consumption, the link with hypertension was not of statistical importance.
