Trends in blood pressure and usual dietary sodium intake among children and adolescents, National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2003 to 2016
Hypertension Jun 29, 2019
Overwyk KJ, et al. - Given a decline in blood pressure and sodium intake among children and adolescents (ie, youths) over the past decade in the United States, researchers sought to update temporal trends and determine how usual sodium intake is related to secular changes in blood pressure. They analyzed blood pressure and dietary data of 12,249 participants (aged 8 to 17 years) of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2003 to 2016. Findings revealed a decline in blood pressure and usual sodium intake among youths from 2003 to 2016. Despite the association of 1000 mg/day higher usual sodium intake with ≈20% higher odds of elevated blood pressure/hypertension and hypertension, the association with hypertension was not statistically significant.
