Trends in bariatric surgery procedures among patients with ESKD in the United States
Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology Jul 31, 2019
Sheetz KH, et al. - By analyzing data for Medicare beneficiaries undergoing bariatric surgery in the United States, researchers assessed longitudinal practice patterns for bariatric surgery in obese patients with ESKD, using linear regression models. They also used Poisson regression to estimate risk-adjusted complications, readmissions, and length of stay for patients with and without ESKD. From 2006 to 2016, a ninefold increase in the number of patients with ESKD undergoing bariatric surgery has been reported. More readmissions and slightly longer hospitals stays were reported for patients with ESKD. Similar complication rates for sleeve gastrectomy were reported between patients with and without ESKD. In patients with ESKD, the most common bariatric surgical procedure which has replaced Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. In patients with sleeve gastrectomy, a favorable complication profile was found.
