Trends and correlates of driving under the influence of alcohol among different types of adult substance users in the United States: A national survey study
BMC Public Health May 08, 2019
Park JY, et al. - Via a cross-sectional, nationally representative, population-based survey, researchers analyzed trends and variables related to driving under the influence of alcohol (DUIA) by substance use type. From 2008 to 2014, a significant decrease in DUIA prevalence among alcohol only users, prescription opioids only users, marijuana only users, prescription opioids-marijuana users, multiple prescription drug users, and other multiple drug users was noted upon Joinpoint analysis. All drug use groups, relative to the alcohol only group, demonstrated increased likelihood of DUIA, which were especially elevated for the multiple drug use groups. Factors that were positively related to DUIA included younger age, male sex, white race, higher income, and alcohol abuse/dependence.
