Trends and age-related disparities in opioid use disorder treatment admissions for adolescents and young adults
Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment Aug 18, 2021
Welsh JW, Dennis ML, Funk R, et al. - In this secondary data analysis, researchers identified OUD treatment disparities in youth.
From 2008 to 2017, researchers identified significantly decreased OUD treatment admissions by 63% for adolescents and 13% for young adults.
For adolescents, a non-significant increase in the rate of planned MOUD at intake occurred from 1.1% to 3.0%.
Across the time period, the recommendation of MOUD was more commonly made in young adults (13.5 to 21.8%).
Treatment length of stay increased for young adults.
Significantly greater percentage of older adults with OUD presented for OUD treatment relative to adolescents (44.6% vs 3.6%) and young adults (44.6% vs 22.2%).
Among those who initiated treatment, adolescents (93% vs 2%) and young adults (93% vs. 56%) had lower rates of planned MOUD.
Overall in youth, an unmet need for OUD treatment and recommendation of MOUD is suggested.
