Treatments and outcomes of spinal metastasis from thymic epithelial tumors: 10-year experience with 15 patients in a single center
European Spine Journal May 11, 2019
Jia Q, et al. - In this retrospective analysis of patients with spinal metastasis from thymic epithelial tumors (TETs), researchers focused on the possible management strategies and outcomes. They analyzed patients who received either radical or debulking surgery plus radiochemotherapy as adjuvant therapy between 2007 and 2017. Overall seven men and eight women were analyzed (median age was 52 years). Longer progression-free survival (PFS) was observed in relation to radical surgery, while PFS was related to better overall survival (OS). Post-debulking surgery, postoperative radiotherapy seemed to have utility as a supplementary treatment option, and greater OS was observed in patients who responded to postoperative chemotherapy. For spinal metastasis from TETs, WHO type B3–C appeared to be an adverse factor.
