Treatment patterns and outcomes in botulinum therapy for patients with facial synkinesis
JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery May 20, 2019
Shinn JR, et al. - Researchers undertook this prospective cohort study of 99 patients treated for facial synkinesis in order to determine the dosing patterns and outcomes of onabotulinum toxin A therapy in these patients. Injections were commonly administered in 6 facial muscles and their dose was progressively increased until the achievement of a steady state after 3 consecutive treatment sessions. The significant and most substantial response was noted among younger patients, females, and those with oral symptoms and greater overall disease severity. In facial synkinesis, onabotulinum toxin A injections thus resulted in improved patient-reported outcomes.
