Treatment outcomes and prognostic factors after recurrence of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma
World Journal of Surgery Jun 11, 2018
Hamai Y, et al. - In this review, researchers evaluated recurrence patterns, treatment outcomes and prognostic factors in patients in whom esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) recurred after curative surgery, given the importance of these for tailoring optimal therapies for individual patients with recurrent esophageal cancer. In univariate and multivariate analyses, independent factors for survival after recurrence included selected time to recurrence, recurrence location, number of organs with recurrence and treatment after recurrence. Poor survival was reported in patients with ESCC, in addition to early or distant recurrence or recurrence in ≥3 recurrent organs. Tailoring appropriate multimodal therapies was recommended for individual patients with recurrent ESCC.
