Treatment of radiation maculopathy and radiation-induced macular edema: A systematic review
Survey of Ophthalmology Sep 12, 2020
Fallico M, Chronopoulos A, Schutz JS, et al. - Since radiation maculopathy and radiation-induced macular edema are common sight-threatening complications following radiotherapy, especially those used for uveal melanoma, researchers reviewed existing clinical evidence, mostly based on small sample-sized and retrospective studies, for radiation maculopathy management and, in particular, radiation-induced macular edema management. Currently, the first-line approach is usually intravitreal anti-VEGF. For those with suboptimal response or contraindications to anti-VEGF agents, intravitreal dexamethasone implant may be a choice. Intravitreal bevacizumab and ranibizumab, peripheral laser photocoagulation, and subtenon triamcinolone acetonide are possible preventive therapies that require future research.
